PLANT Architect Inc. requires a skilled and experienced Senior Landscape Architect who will be responsible for overseeing the technical and design aspects of landscape projects in the studio, including the work of more junior staff. The Senior Landscape Architect reports to a Partner and works closely with both the Architecture and Landscape Architecture Teams. The candidate will ensure consistency and excellence in design from schematic design through to construction completion and is responsible for managing projects, preparation of technical drawings, client meetings and expectations, and for ensuring work is within the project scope, schedule and budget. Projects will include public landscapes, public realm and urban infrastructure, multi-unit residential, research and experimentation, exhibition work, and custom private commissions. The candidate will provide excellent design guidance and project management and will be responsible to represent PLANT Architect Inc. to clients and the design community, also mentoring more junior staff in their careers, and working profitably for the firm. Ideally, the candidate will be available to begin work in early October.

PLANT Architect Inc. is an award-winning practice that branches into the domains of architecture, landscape, and design. Our studio operates across spatial scales and disciplinary borders to reveal a site’s potential, distil client-needs into a clear design vision, and create timeless spaces that heighten one’s experience of a site, city, or natural landscape. Our areas of specialization include residential and institutional architecture and landscape architecture, interiors, urban infrastructure, feasibility studies, and master planning. We also offer a broad range of value-added services that include furniture and lighting design, public facilitation, and integrated graphics. Based in Toronto, the studio comprises 11 staff, including both architects and landscape architects.

  • Leads and monitors landscape architectural design team.

  • Interacts with clients, attends meetings and makes presentations.

  • Effectively manages projects, coordinates and reviews the work of junior staff on various projects.

  • Develops programming, coordinates consultants, prepares conceptual designs, presentations, design development, and construction documents.

  • Modifies and reviews drawings for landscape architecture projects. 

  • Creates, coordinates and reviews technical drawings and specifications.

  • Defines and manages project budgets, critical path, schedules, team communication, consultants and clients.

  • Develops solutions to technical problems.

  • Creates technical/CAD drawings and assists junior staff as needed. 

  • Is enthusiastic about contributing to the life of the studio, and encourages professional development initiatives of all team members.

  • Works collaboratively with and communicates with Partners and other team members to meet overall project objectives.

  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of concept design renderings and 2D/3D presentation/design drawings.

  • Participates in promotional and business development effort.

  • Contributes ideas for professional development opportunities in-house for all staff

Skills Required:
  • Min. 8 to 10 years post-graduate professional office experience including proven track record of client interaction, coordination and leading the design of large and medium-scale projects such as urban squares and parks, public realm projects, and residential projects.

  • Licensed Landscape Architect, OALA Full Membership or ability to obtain this promptly.

  • Must be eligible to work in Canada - Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Renewable Work Permit
  • Demonstrated excellence in design.

  • Familiarity with local building codes, ADA, city by-laws and authority approval processes.

  • Demonstrated level of expertise and knowledge of local arboriculture and horticulture.

  • Demonstrated technical skills suitable to prepare technical working drawings for both hardscape and softscape elements (grading and layout plans, material plans, planting plans, construction details).

  • Demonstrated excellent detailing skills, or the ability to recognize good detailing and work through problems.

  • Possesses a high level of graphic communication skills and spoken and written English.

  • Ability to communicate design ideas and give direction quickly.

  • Possesses a high level of freehand and rendering skills, and is adept at the following: technical drafting, design and layout software, including Vectorworks, AutoCAD, Sketch up, PhotoShop, In-Design, Illustrator, and PowerPoint.

  • Has the ability to mentor team members, offer guidance and leadership.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a studio environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of the total project process including fee and team management, schedules and budgets.

  • Strong project management skills. Ability to manage multiple, concurrent projects in various stages of development.

  • Strong organizational, and communication skills.

  • Passionate and enthusiastic about landscape architecture, architecture, and design.

Education Requirements:
  • BLA, MLA or foreign equivalent
